JONAH HEX #44 6 GUN WAR COMIC BOOK REVIEW

GRAY / PALMIOTTI / CUCINA
Jonah Hex #44 begins a new and compelling chapter in the 6 Gun War. Hex’s old friend and nemesis Quentin Turnbull is back and he is pissed, he’s out for sweet revenge against Jonah, and it seems as though ain’t nothing gonna stop him this time. Turnball believes that Jonah is responsible for killing his son, and so we are in for a ride filled with bullets, blood, and banditos. Oh crap did I forget to mention the liquor and the broads?
Jonah Hex is a comic book that is full of dark grit. I really enjoy the writing of Palmiotti in this series. He really has a grasp on that western flare and lingo. The art is simply stunning, one of the things I find really interesting with this comic is that so much of the story is told by the sequential art, sometimes you don’t even need the dialogue to know what is happening and that is a true testament to the talent of the artist.
We find Jonah Hexbeing set up in a trap in Texas by Quentin Turnball, who is by the way accompanied by El Papagyo…hmmm I like saying that… EL PAPAGYO. Anyway, back to the story. Turnball and his posse of gruesome dudes lay quite the beating down on Jonah and give him a burial Texas style, leaving him for dead.
BUT as we know you can’t count our boy Hex out, just cause he’s been buried alive can you? Of Course not. At any rate we find Jonah getting out of this scrap by the skin of his teeth and he is worse for the wear.
Cut t0 Mexico, where we run into a little lady by the name of Tullulah Black who has got quite the sharp tongue and fast draw to match. Miss. Tullulah finds herself breaking up a card game with Bat Lash stuck plum in the middle of all the action. The two cause the body count in Mexico to rise just a little and then decide they better get outta dodge so to speak before the bring anymore attention to themselves. Just as they are about to hit the road, El Papagyo and his band of banditos appears and has other plans for the two. El Papagyo is not pleased to see Bat Lash back in Mexico, and shares the story of how he had a run in with Jonah in Texas, and how the outcome was not so good. El Papagyo captures the two and has some pretty nasty intentions for what he wants to do to Tullulah and Bat Lash, all this being over seen by a contented Turnball who is under the impression that he has accomplished the job he set out to do, which is kill Jonah Hex.
I don’t wanna give away anymore spoilers, so I will conclude my review here. All in all, this is a really gritty and dark western. I have never really been into western comics prior to reading Jonah Hex, but there is something special about the way Palmiotti writes this charater that makes me wanna read it. If you have never given a western comic book a chance try out Jonah Hex, it might just surprise you. This is a good time to get on board because the new story is just starting.
