This was hyped up to be one of the big Marvel issues to be released for their 70th birthday. Marvel had instructed retailers to order, order, order! No information about this issue was given to them, except to say that this will be a comic your customers will be clam mering for. Marvels reasoning for the hush, so nothing was to be leaked onto the Internet prior to the release of this book, they did not want any spoilers what so ever. The book was priced at a hefty $4.99 to boot. A Monday release date, the book was so special that it deserved to have it’s own spotlight placed on it, this book was too good to be put on shelves along side the common regular Wednesday comic shop fare. This all means the book should be FUCKING AMAZING, RIGHT?
WRONG WRONG WRONG!!!!
If you look at the list of creators on this title you can plainly see why they had to price it at $4.99, BUT with this huge list of greats, the story should have been spectacular. I don’t feel like I’m even over stating it, I mean just look at the names on this. I wanted and wished for so much more than I got, specially as a Capt fan. If you have not picked this up yet don’t worry you have not missed a beat. If you haven’t read it yet but are going to get it and are worried about spoiliers, well don’t worry there is not one thing that can spoil this issue except the over marketing of this book prior to it’s release.
I know I may have a lot of you out there hating on me right now, but I am not suggesting this was not a decent tribute to Steve Rogers in all the various stages of his life, but the hype is what I can’t get over. What was it all about? Once again the Marvel marketing machine has done it’s job because a lot of fans rushed out to buy this issue, including myself and really it was not a bad read, but just not what I was expecting for all the hype surrounding it. This issue kinda reminds me of a wake. When you have a close friend or loved one who has passed away and you get a gang of his/hers buddies all together and they each recant their personal experience with this individual.
Honestly I don’t know what I was expecting so I can’t say I didn’t like it. But in the same breath I can’t say that I did. I know that’s quite the juxtapositon but I really don’t have much to say about this. The thing I feel the most passionate about in regards to this book, is the excessive cover price and the excessive publicity. Maybe if it was under hyped I would have actually enjoyed it more.
I don’t want to spend to much time retelling panel for panel what happens in this issue, because it is basically it’s a montage of his life for lack of a better way to put it. Maybe some of you out there will disagree with me, and that’s cool, but this issue just didn’t do it for me. I much preferred the new Batman and Robin by Grant Morrison & Quitely because there was a new and interesting story. That book lived up to the hype and was cheaper too. Before you all totally think I’m a Bitch for knocking this issue, I do love Brubaker’s work on the Cap series in general and I am looking forward to Steve coming back in July. So keep you insults to a minimum thanks.
Thanks for checking out the site, stay tuned for more review. If you disagreed with my assessment of the book I welcome your comments.
Peace,
Variant Girl
